   B.SC. (HONS) ECONOMICS

he Economics degree programme is popular with students who want the rigour of an Economics degree. It is less flexible than certain other degrees offered by the University of London, as students have to pursue the majority of their units from within the Economics units, with a resultant limited scope for options.

In the first year of the B.Sc. Economics degree, students study four compulsory subjects designed to give them the necessary platform for more advanced courses in years 2 and 3 of the degree programme.

The year 1 subjects are:

  • Introduction to Business & Management
  • Introduction to Economics
  • Statistics 1 & 2
  • Mathematics 1 & 2
After which students are left with 8 remaining papers which must be split four-four over years 2 and 3.

There are three compulsory papers, and four option papers.

Whilst year 1 of the programme is standard – with 4 compulsory subjects - over years 2 and 3, students on the Economics degree must sit for the following papers:

  • MICROECONOMICS
  • MACROECONOMICS
  • ELEMENTS OF ECONOMETRICS & ECONOMIC STATISTICS
Students must do both intermediate economics subjects in their second year – Macroeconomics and Microeconomics as these are required for most of the optional economic units in their third year. Subjects like Industrial Economics have Microeconomics as a pre-requisite, and courses like Monetary Economics have Macroeconomics as a pre-requisite – whereas subjects like International Economics require students to have passed both Microeconomics and Macroeconomics.

Under the University of London structure students can choose options from the following Selection Groups

Students need to plan ahead, carefully, at the start of their second year, as although the range of elective subjects is extremely wide, there are certain regulations governing how many options can be taken from (what the University of London calls) each “Selection Group”. For example, if a student is keen to study Organisation Theory, they must first study its pre-requisite, Introduction to Sociology. So students need to plan ahead and be aware of the ‘pre-requisites’ that may apply to any of their chosen subjects.

Whichever options you select, or however you intend to split your compulsory papers/ elective loads over years 2 and 3; think ahead carefully …. and seek the Academic Director’s advice, if necessary. The two people who know all of the “ins and outs” of all of the degree programmes best, in Singapore, are Mark Harris at SIC and Mike Cope at Stansfield College.

Students must choose four units from Selection Group E such as:

  • CORPORATE FINANCE
  • MONETARY ECONOMICS
  • FURTHER MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMISTS
  • INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS
  • INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS

Of these Corporate Finance appears to be the most popular.

GENERAL ADVISE

For those who prefer qualitative [written] subjects, typically the popular electives are:

  • LAW OF BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS
  • HUMAN RESOURSE MANAGEMENT
  • MARKETING
  • PRINCIPLES OF BANKING
  • MANAGEMENT: INTERNATIONAL & COMPARATIVE PERSEPECTIVES

Some students may be interested in the more specialised qualitative subjects including:

  • SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
  • ORGANISATION THEORY

For students who prefer more mathematical papers, options include:

  • MANAGEMENT SCIENCE METHODS
  • MANAGEMENT MATHS
  • PRODUCTION OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
  • ANALYSIS OF STATEGIC MANAGEMENT
  • ECONOMETRICS
  • FURTHER MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMISTS
  • INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS

Of these Management Science Methods is by far the most popular.
