   B.SC. (HONS) MANAGEMENT

In the first year of the B.Sc. Management degree, students study four compulsory subjects designed to give them the necessary platform for more advanced courses in years 2 and 3 of the degree programme.

The year 1 subjects are:

  • Introduction to Business & Management
  • Introduction to Economics
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Mathematics 1 / Statistics 1
After which students are left with 8 remaining papers which must be split four-four over years 2 and 3.

There are four compulsory papers, and four option papers. Whichever options they select, students of the Management degree must study:

  • Elements of Accounting & Finance
  • Managerial Economics
  • Management: International Comparatives and Perspectives
and either
  • Analysis of Strategic Management
  • or Organisation Theory
Most students select to pursue two of these course in their second year (while also pursuing two elective subjects) and do the other two in their final year (along with a further two optional subjects).

The range of options is very wide. For those who prefer qualitative subjects, typically the four electives selected would be chosen from:

  • THE LAW OF BUSINESS ORGANISATIONS
  • MARKETING
  • COMPUTER BASED INFORMATION SYSTEMS
  • HUMAN RESOURSE MANAGEMENT
  • ELEMENTS OF SOCIAL AND APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY
  • PRINCIPLES OF BANKING
For students who prefer more mathematical papers, options such as
  • MANAGEMENT SCIENCE METHODS
  • MANAGEMENT MATHS
  • PRODUCTION OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
  • INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS
… can be selected.

They key compulsory subjects of the Management degree are Managerial Economics and Organisation Theory. For a variety of reasons, students wish to avoid one or the other – or both!

Avoiding both is impossible, of course; but by strategically choosing which subject to do when, students can increase the chances of obtaining a high classification of degree.

Managerial Economics is a pre-requisite for Analysis of Strategic Management, whereas Introduction to Sociology is a pre-requisite for Organisation Theory.

For students who enjoy Economics in year one (and who are reasonable at mathematics) but dislike Sociology, they must do Managerial Economics in their second year so as to avoid doing Organisation Theory at all.

For students who dislike Economics during their first year (or for those who consider themselves to be rather weak at mathematics) but enjoy Sociology – they should do Organisation Theory in their 2nd year, leaving Managerial Economics until year 3.

[For those students who dislike both Economics and Sociology, and who feel they are weak at Mathematics: after year 1 they should consider transferring pathway to the B.Sc. Business degree!]
