Why Study Sociology?
Sociology is the study of the basic substance of society. Its interests
range from large-scale issues of social structure and organisation down to
the conventions and patterns of face-to-face social interaction. It
provides a unique ability to understand how social factors culture,
tradition, power relationships and so forth -- penetrate and give a shape
to almost every aspect of human life. It also develops intensely precise
analytical skills, both in terms of critical and conceptual analysis and
skills of rigorous research.
As a discipline, sociology generates many of the most fundamental
insights, ideas and principles applied in more specialist subjects into a
larger, more comprehensive view of society as a whole, and social
relationships in particular. As a result, sociology represents a uniquely
powerful set of intellectual tools, but also a very challenging, complex
and often subtle field of study.
