IT PROFESSIONAL

Introduction
to Windows
Operating System
This course provides an introduction to the Windows operating system and the
hardware of a typical microcomputer system. Skills needed to navigate the
Windows desktop, manage disks and files, and use Windows applications are
explored. The WordPad and Paint programs are utilized as office tools. Students
become proficient users of pointing devices.
Office
Communication Systems
This course exposes students to the variety of information/communication modes
available to employees in today’s technological office environment.
Communication theory, electronic communications, written business documentation,
automated procedures, and techniques for effective oral communication are
explored. The student is introduced to current trends in communication
transmission. Accuracy and language art skills are emphasized. Students learn
how to write business letters, memos, and reports.
Introduction
to Electronic Worksheets
Students acquire a basic conceptual and practical understanding of electronic
worksheets by completing spreadsheet and graphic applications using
windows-based software. Applications completed in this class are representative
of a variety of business office operations.
Word
Processing Concepts and Applications
This course provides an introduction to the concepts of word processing and
hands-on practice utilizing the basic features of Windows-based word processing
package. Content includes the document cycle, word processing equipment and
system configurations, and word processing careers. Hands-on applications
provide practice in the following features: cursor movement; formatting; basic
editing (insert, delete, move, copy); block operations; search and replace;
spell check, grammar check and thesaurus; headers and footers; working with
multiple documents; printing; footnotes and endnotes; forms; and disk
maintenance.
Spreadsheet
Applications for Business
Students gain a conceptual and practical understanding of electronic worksheets
utilizing the spreadsheet, data management, graphics, and application
development components of a Windows-based spreadsheet program. Students complete
a variety of exercises designed to develop mastery of the major components of
the spreadsheet program as it is used in the business office environment. This
course covers the material for the Microsoft Office User Specialist Excel Expert
Exam.

Electronic
Publishing
This course provides an introduction to the field of desktop publishing.
Students explore the history and basic principles of page design and layout
using Windows-based desktop publishing and presentation software. Areas of study
include hardware, software, terminology, the publishing process, typesetting
fundamentals, and page design.
Advanced
Word Processing Applications
Students learn proficiency using many of the advanced functions and special
features of a comprehensive word processing package. Course content includes:
print styles and sizes; macros; data manipulation; basic mathematical
computations; special text features like outline, columns, and merges; and
graphic elements.
Advanced
Desktop Publishing
Students have an in-depth, hands-on desktop publishing experience. Working
primarily in teams, students master the advanced features of Windows-based
desktop publishing software including long document formatting, table editing,
color manipulation, and developing and printing non-standard size publications.
Extensive work with typography and graphics including scanning and manipulating
images aids students in the production of a thematically based book or magazine.
Students are introduced to on-line publishing. Emphasis is on mastering design
principles for effective communication.
Electronic
File and Disk Management
This course is designed to provide students with a conceptual and practical
understanding of electronic file and disk management skills. The course covers
Microsoft Windows filing and hard disk management techniques as well as
discussion of software designed to complement and supplement Windows. Students
complete a variety of exercises designed to familiarize them with the major
components of Microsoft Windows. Applications performed in this class are
representative of a variety of business office operations.
